I had a guest stay with me last month and they needed a mosquito net in order to sleep peacefully. I was surprised, since living in Wotten Waven, Dominica amongst sulphur fumes and cool nights, it seems the mosquitoes are virtually non- existent. During the day I gave my guest Oil of Ojas, one of Dominica’s premier products, which is an all natural mosquito repellent, among other things. I also informed my guest of other natural mosquito repellents such as;

1.  Fan blowing. By having moving air in the room, mosquitoes are blown off course .

2.  Lemon grass. This herb abounds on Dominica and repells mosquitoes because of the citronelle oil in it

3.  Wear no perfumes or lotions.  Some artificial scents in perfumes and lotions can attract mosquitoes.

4.  Wear lighter colors.  Dark colors, such as black or blue draws mosquitoes.  Lighter colors do not.

5. Change light bulbs to LED or yellow bug lights. Several companies make light bulbs with different frequencies that repel mosquitoes.

6. Catnip essential oil. One of the many natural essential oils that repels mosquitoes.

7. Build or buy a bat house . Brown bats live on Dominica and are excellent for controlling insects as they eat large quantities when they fly.  Having them around your home is a good thing.

8. Garlic.  Mix 1 part juice to 5 parts water and place in spray bottle to use on exposed skin.

9. Clean up standing water. Mosquitoes need water for their larvae to grow to maturity.  Even water in flower vases needs to be renewed regularly.

Take time to enjoy the outdoors this year with all natural mosquito repellents!
